A 15-4 run in the second quarter of their Colorado Highway 184 duel against the host Bears (10-12, 6-5 3A/2A/1A SJBL) secured not only a victory in their rivalry meeting but also a likely playoff berth for the red-hot Mancos girls basketball team (9-9, 7-4 3A/2A/1A SJBL).

Winners of five in a row, the Jays spread out the scoring, with senior Destiny Kramer notching 11 points to co-lead the team alongside sophomore Tinsley Aspromonte. Senior Caylee Moore added eight, while fellow senior Tyla Henry scored five as the visitors held the Bears to just 12 points over the final 24 minutes of play.

DHS senior Taylor Erautt scored seven points to pace the Bears, while classmate Kacey Schmittel and sophomore Jordyn Erautt added six apiece.

Dove Creek, meanwhile, scored the final 23 points of the game to pull away from the visiting Trojans on Friday night and guarantee the program its ninth straight winning season since head coach Julie Kibel took back the reins. The Bulldogs (13-8, 7-4 3A/2A/1A SJBL) controlled the game throughout against Ouray but didn’t feel comfortable until midway through the third quarter, when the hosts began to flex their muscles and moved toward their 13th straight win over their longtime 1A district foes.

Dove Creek sits at No. 27 in the 2A rankings heading into the final week, while Mancos checks in at No. 29. The top 32 teams make the regional rounds the weekend of Mar. 6-7.

Mancos has one scheduled contest as CHSAA enters its final week of regular-season play. The Jays travel to Telluride on Thursday night for a meeting with the Miners. Also Thursday, Dolores will celebrate its Senior Night against Nucla as the Bears look to avenge a loss from last week against the league champions. Friday, Dove Creek hosts Ridgway for its Senior Night.

As a result of the weekend’s winter storms, M-CHS (9-12, 3-7 4A/3A IML) had its Friday night contest against Monte Vista moved to Tuesday evening in The Jungle, with the girls set to take on the Pirates at 6 p.m. M-CHS enters the week as the No. 24 team in the 4A standings. Both the M-CHS and Dolores vs. Nucla contests will be on the radio, along with the Panthers’ Senior Night against Bayfield on Friday night – all available on KRTZ 98.7 FM and krtzradio.com.

The Bears required two and a half quarters to shake their intracounty rivals, blowing open a 31-19 halftime lead with a 16-9 third-quarter run to end any doubt about the final result.

Eleven different Bears reached the scoresheet, led by 14 points from junior Koby McClellan. Sophomore Lane Johnson added 11, junior Miles Brown had nine, and sophomore Branson Lee scored seven to keep the Jays at arm’s length and send Dolores to its fourth straight win in the rivalry series.

Mancos (2-15, 1-10 3A/2A/1A SJBL) was led by 12 points from junior James Potts and nine from classmate Michael Resner as they used the three-ball early to keep the Bears off balance.

Guaranteed a winning season for the first time in nine years, the second-place Bears (13-9, 7-4 3A/2A/1A SJBL) face league champion Nucla on Thursday night to celebrate Senior Night as they look to build momentum for a DHS program headed toward its first appearance in the 2A field of 32 since CHSAA did away with district play and adopted the Selection and Seeding Index. The Bears enter the final week at No. 24 in the 2A standings.

Mancos will close out the season with two more contests this week, taking on Dove Creek on Tuesday in a nonleague encounter before finishing the season on the road at Telluride on Thursday night.

Dove Creek (4-16, 3-8 3A/2A/1A SJBL) could never find its footing against the playoff-bound Trojans, trailing 15-5 after one quarter and never getting closer in their home contest. The ‘Dogs face Mancos on Tuesday and Ridgway on Friday to close their 2025-26 campaign.

M-CHS (21-0, 10-0 4A/3A IML) has a postponed contest against Monte Vista to play on Tuesday night in The Jungle before the Panthers, who dropped to No. 2 in the 4A rankings, look to close out the regular season strong on Senior Night on Friday against Bayfield. Both M-CHS contests will air on KRTZ 98.7 FM.
