I will see my 74th winter solstice in 2026. I enjoy good health and have a lifestyle that doesn’t expose me to many serious risks. I am confident I will outlive the Trump administration, and for that I am grateful.
I am also confident I will live long enough to read the first well sourced, scholarly analyses of the incompetence, corruption and cruelty that characterizes the Trump administration. When Trump no longer has the levers of power in America, documents will surface and people will come forth with details and testimony that are today concealed out of fear of retribution.
What breaks my heart is knowing I will not live long enough to see our friends and allies in democratic nations around the world trust the United States again. The Trump administration’s punitive tariffs have bewildered our best trade partners. His repeated insults and lies like “taking” Greenland or claiming NATO allies “stood back” in conflicts we initiated in Afghanistan and elsewhere have angered our best allies.
But what frightens our friends, trade partners and allies the most are the Americans who voted Donald Trump into a second term knowing his sexual history, knowing his financial history and witnessing his attempts to use force to overturn the results of the fair and decisive 2020 election.
They will never get over that. Neither should we.
