Fort Lewis College has launched a new dietetics program that will allow students to pursue careers as registered dietitian nutritionists – experts who provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy to prevent and manage chronic diseases.

According to a news release by the college, the program has earned candidacy for accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, allowing students to check off a key step toward becoming an RDN.

Coursework in the program prepares students for a range of health-related careers, including dietetics, food service management, nutrition technician roles and pathways to medical, physical therapy and naturopathic programs, the release said.

According to the release, the program emphasizes hands-on, local experience through partnerships with Colorado State University Extension and Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center, and addresses regional health needs like high rates of diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.

Previously, Four Corners students had to travel hours or leave their home communities to attend accredited dietetics programs, the release said.

“This is really about access and meeting community need,” said Program Director Marnie Clay in the release. “Our students are anchored to place, and now they can complete this critical coursework without leaving the region.”

She said the accreditation process involved a comprehensive review of curriculum, a site visit, student support services and institutional resources and an “extensive self-study.”

Clay said the overarching goal is to “become a hub for nutrition and dietetics in the Four Corners.”

“This program keeps students here, supports rural health care and gives our graduates the tools to make a real difference,” she said in the release.
