In July, Rep. Jeff Hurd voted to take away health care for over 35% of Montezuma County citizens. He did this right after stating in a letter, along with 15 other representatives, the following: “Protecting Medicaid is essential for the vulnerable constituents we were elected to represent. Therefore, we cannot support a final bill that threatens access to coverage or jeopardizes the stability of our hospitals and providers.”
By voting in the exact opposite of his own words, he flagrantly voted against our interests and in favor of the interests of billionaires and their tax cuts. When the citizens who gathered in Dolores to speak to Mr. Hurd Aug. 27 were told he was canceling his appearance due to an emergency with one of his aides (not the first no show, by the way), the overwhelming reaction was disbelief of his excuse.
As the saying goes “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” The question isn’t why we don’t believe Mr. Hurd, it’s “Why would anyone believe anything he says?” The citizens of Montezuma County deserve a Representative in Congress who is trustworthy, truthful and dedicated to fighting for our interests.
