Saturday: M-CHS 2, Alamosa 2

Down 2-0 to the Mean Moose entering halftime, M-CHS surged back through sophomore Degan Lake, who netted a second-half brace to pull the Panthers level. M-CHS (2-4-3) picked up its first point in league play and extended its unbeaten streak to three consecutive matches. Lake’s long-range free kick in the 54th minute went through a pile of bodies in front of the Alamosa net, leaving the Mean Moose goalkeeper frozen as it bounced into the corner of the goal. Ten minutes later, Lake perhaps scored the best goal of the season for the orange-and-black, lashing a loose ball at the top of the box into the upper corner to even the score.

M-CHS prepares for a Friday evening Homecoming encounter with Pagosa Springs (Oct. 3, 4 p.m.), looking to avenge a 5-1 defeat to the Pirates from early September.

Volleyball

Friday: Alamosa 3, M-CHS 0

Saturday: Centauri 3, M-CHS 2

The Panthers nearly staged a reverse sweep comeback against the Falcons on Saturday afternoon, taking the third and fourth sets before falling 16-14 in the tiebreaking fifth set. M-CHS (9-7, 1-3 3A Intermountain League) heads to Pagosa Springs on Tuesday in search of a season sweep of the Pirates, before returning home for a Friday night match against Monument Valley (5:30 p.m.) as part of the Homecoming festivities.

Saturday: Dolores 3, Ridgway 0

The Bears (11-1, 6-1 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) wasted little time getting back on track after their first setback of the season, cruising past the Demons while conceding just 33 points in the sweep. A Thursday night match against Mancos (7-7, 4-2 SJBL) lies ahead for head coach Brianna Wyatt and her top-10 Bears.

Saturday: Norwood 3, Dove Creek 0

The Bulldogs dropped to 1-10 on the season with a Homecoming defeat to the Mavericks. Dove Creek will seek its second win of the season Tuesday afternoon in Ouray.

Cross-country

Saturday: DHS boys take fourth at McGinn Memorial meet

M-CHS junior Cruz Plewe led a parade of county athletes across the line inside the top 15 in Pagosa Springs, placing fifth (20:13), followed by Dolores sophomore Joseph Padilla (6th, 20:22), fellow Bear Corvin Smith (11th, 20:57), DHS junior Owen Lowe (13th, 21:15), and Mancos sophomore Cuinn Archer (14th, 21:25). Football

Friday: M-CHS 57, Shiprock 6

The Panthers had no problems evening up their record at 2-2 heading into the start of IML play, dominating the Chieftains. M-CHS limited Shiprock to fewer than 120 yards of total offense and now sets its sights on Homecoming and a league-opening encounter with Gunnison on Friday night at 7 p.m. Local radio station 98.7 FM KRTZ will provide coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Softball

Thursday: Alamosa 16, M-CHS 12

Saturday: Rifle 12, M-CHS 0; Rifle 13, M-CHS 4

The Panthers nearly exacted revenge against the Mean Moose from a loss earlier in the month, but couldn’t hold on to 4-0 and 8-7 leads against the hosts. M-CHS (6-15, 6-5 3A IML) has one regular-season game remaining as it heads to Delta for a battle of the Panthers on Tuesday afternoon. After the weekend’s action, M-CHS is ranked No. 27 in the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index, with the top 32 teams advancing to regional play in mid-October.
