Saturday: Montezuma-Cortez 3, Pagosa Springs 1
The Panthers (7-5, 1-1 3A IML) matched their win total from last season with their victory in The Jungle against the Pirates. M-CHS snapped a six-match winless streak against Pagosa Springs to even their IML record. Mancos (5-6, 2-2 2A/1A SJBL) will visit The Jungle on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for a 7 p.m. match.
While some of the first snow of the season fell on the San Juans, the Bears (7-0, 3-0 2A/1A SJBL) breezed past the Trojans. The Bears have yet to drop a set this season and will travel to Nucla on Tuesday and Telluride on Thursday before returning home to face Norwood on Saturday.
Saturday: DHS boys take fourth in Bayfield; M-CHS’ Plewe top area finisher
Bears junior Corvin Smith paced the Dolores boys, who squared off against several of their 2A regional foes in Bayfield on Saturday morning. Smith’s 17th-place finish (20:19) led the Bears, followed by the scoring pack of classmate Owen Lowe (26th, 20:59), sophomore Joseph Padilla (30th, 21:07), junior Orin Samulski (40th, 21:37), and sophomore Nathan Gaddis (53rd, 22:39).
M-CHS junior Cruz Plewe continued his recent tear on the course, taking sixth overall on the challenging course in 19:20. Mancos sophomore Cuinn Archer led the Jays with a 29th-place effort (21:07).
In the girls race, Mancos freshman Carly Kroll took 19th (26:24), while Dolores sophomore Emilynn Hill finished 27th (27:52), and M-CHS senior Camryn Oliver raced to 54th place (31:20) to lead their respective teams.
M-CHS will host its annual meet on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Parque de Vida in Cortez, with high school races starting at 9:30 and 10:15 a.m.

The Panthers (4-12, 4-5 3A WSL) posted their best offensive and defensive outputs in a dominant sweep of the Longhorns. M-CHS allowed just two hits in the game one win while pounding out 15 hits in the game two victory. Junior AnnaLisa Abeyta led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while freshman Aubrey Taveira and sophomore CeJae Snyder combined to drive in seven runs. Sophomore Faith Muzzy scored three runs and added an RBI triple, while D’Nya Manuel scored twice and drove in two runs. Sophomore Ava Hawkins and junior Jayden White combined for the pitching effort in the second win.
M-CHS is scheduled to make another trip up Colorado Highway 82 to face Aspen on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in a doubleheader against the Skiers.
