On Saturday during the Round 9 race of the 2025 Motocross season at Ironman National in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Hunter Lawrence won his first overall 450 cc race win ahead of his brother, Jett Lawrence, and competitor Chase Sexton.
In the first race, “Captain America” Eli Tomac claimed hist first hole shot of the year, followed closely by Hunter Lawrence. Jett Lawrence had a “horrible” start.
Not long after the start of the race, Sexton, who was in the leading pack, crashed, causing him to lose about five positions. Meanwhile, Hunter Lawrence challenged Tomac and Jett Lawrence worked on passing sixth place racer Jorge Prado.
Hunter Lawrence passed Tomac as Jett Lawrence passed Prado.
By the four-minute mark, Hunter Lawrence was in first, followed by Sexton, Jett Lawrence, R.J. Hampshire and Tomac.
Sexton and Jett Lawrence batted for second place, but Sexton “shut Jett down” and maintained his second place position. With two laps left in the race, Sexton took the lead.
Sexton placed first, followed by Hunter Lawrence in second and Jett Lawrence in third.
In the second race, Tomac once again claimed the hole shot with Hunter Lawrence on his heels. Sexton and Jett Lawrence were lost in the middle of the pack.
Before the end of the first lap, Hunter Lawrence passed Tomac. Soon, Jett Lawrence caught up to Tomac and began battling him for second. Jett Lawrence made the pass, pushing Tomac to third.
Sexton moved to sixth.
Jett Lawrence, who commentators noted was most likely racing “with emotion,” overtook his brother for first. A small crash on Hunter Lawrence’s part allowed Tomac to move back to second. While Sexton carefully moved his way through the pack, he crashed, and damage to the front wheel of his bike forced him to ride off the track, ending his shot at claiming the overall win for the weekend.
Hunter Lawrence reclaimed second, with Tomac moving to third after his bike briefly stalled.
Jett Lawrence placed first, Hunter Lawrence second and Tomac third. Hunter Lawrence’s second place finish crowned him the overall winner of Round 9, marking the first time he’s won an overall win as a 450 rider.
Hampshire placed second overall and Tomac third.
Round 10 will take place at Unadilla MX in New Berlin, New York, on Saturday, Aug. 16. The final race is Aug. 23 at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, Maryland.
