Two finalists have been nominated to fill an upcoming judicial vacancy in the 6th Judicial District Court, which covers Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties.

The vacancy opened after Judge Suzanne Carlson announced plans to retire this fall.

Justin Fay of Pagosa Springs and Reid Stewart of Hesperus were selected by the district nominating commission for consideration by Gov. Jared Polis, who will make the final appointment by Aug. 15.

Fay serves as Archuleta County Court judge, and Stewart serves as La Plata County Court judge. The selection of either will create a new county court vacancy that must be filled.

The selected finalist will take the bench Oct. 1.

The annual salary for the position is $198,798.
