The city of Cortez is inviting residents, particularly those who live, work or recreate near Mesa Elementary School, to participate in a community survey to assess pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The survey specifically looks at areas near West Seventh and South Cedar streets. The survey will remain open until July 18.
The city hopes to gather feedback to guide street and sidewalk improvements near Mesa Elementary, with construction planned for summer 2026. The project is funded by a 2022 Safe Routes to School grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The project near Mesa is focused on creating a safer route to school for students. Safe Routes to School, which was launched in the 1990s, promotes improving safety and infrastructure around schools.
Responses from residents will inform planning to ensure safer, more accessible routes for students and residents.
