Round 1 of the 2025 Motocross season started off with a battle between Cortez’s Eli Tomac and Jett Lawrence, both of whom were out for the majority of the Supercross season recovering from injuries.
The season started at Fox Raceway in Pala, California and marked the return of Tomac and the Lawrence brothers from their Supercross injuries.
In the first race, Jett Lawrence claimed the hole shot, followed closely by his brother, Hunter Lawrence. Though the brothers bumped each other going around the first corner, neither one lost their position. Racing behind the Lawrences was Justin Cooper in third and Chase Sexton in fourth. Tomac raced behind in 10th.
Cooper passed Hunter Lawrence in the first lap and chased after Jett. Meanwhile, Sexton put pressure on Hunter Lawrence for third, passing him.
R.J. Hampshire, who made his 450-SX Motocross debut at Round 1, followed the top four in fifth place. Tomac moved to eighth.
Soon, Tomac was passing Hampshire for fifth and setting his sights on Sexton, who had been passed by Hunter Lawrence. Before Tomac could pass him, however, Sexton crashed on the downhill, causing him to leave the course and forfeit the night’s two races.
Around the seven-minute mark, 2025 Supercross champion Cooper Webb’s bike began smoking, causing him to leave the track and give up placing in the first race.
Tomac gained on third place Hunter, attempting to get around him.
Jett Lawrence placed first, marking his 28th career Motocross win in 32 starts. Cooper came in second, followed by Hunter Lawrence in third and Tomac in fourth, after Hunter barely managed to hold of Tomac for third.
In the second race, Hunter claimed the hole shot, followed by Jett, Aaron Plessinger and Tomac. The top four raced neck and neck before Jett moved past his brother for the first place position.
Plessinger moved to second, while Tomac remained close behind third place Hunter. After Plessinger fell to fourth, the race was focused on Jett Lawrence and Tomac, who were racing in first and second. The two racers battled side by side and Tomac attempted to pass Jett Lawrence on the outside.
“We’re seeing something special from both of these champions right now,” the commentators said, adding that they are looking forward to “the future battles” between the two racers this Motocross season.
Right before the end of the race, Hunter drove off the track briefly, allowing Plessinger to move into the third place.
The race ended with Jett Lawrence in first, Tomac in second and Plessinger in third.
The evening’s two races marked 91 consecutive laps led at this track by Jett Lawrence.
Round 2 of Motocross will take place at Hangtown in Rancho Cordova, California on Sunday, June 1.
