Search and rescue

Wednesday, July 9

5 p.m. A woman called in to report a man and two young children were stranded on McPhee Lake because of the high winds. They were in a small boat that they were able to get to shore but could not get back to the marina. Montezuma County Search and Rescue was deployed. The search team located the boaters and brought them back to safety.

Found body part

Tuesday, July 8

..The sheriff’s office was advised of a human hand that was found at McPhee Lake. The person who found the alleged hand wrapped it in a plastic bag and took it home. A deputy quickly determined it was a deer leg bone.

Indecent exposure

On Monday, July 7

11:48 a.m. A deputy assisted a Cortez police officer regarding a man at the public pool with his pants down. The man was arrested.

Possession of methamphetamine

Friday, July 4

4:11 a.m. A deputy saw an SUV driving in a turn lane and then merge back into traffic without using a turn signal. The deputy followed the SUV to make sure the SUV was not having trouble or driving under the influence. The deputy stopped the vehicle after the SUV again changed lanes without using a turn signal. When the deputy asked dispatch to run the license plate on the SUV, it came back to the same vehicle of another color. The deputy checked both the driver and passenger for warrants. The passenger had a warrant for her arrest. The deputy asked to search the car, and the driver consented. After exiting the SUV, the deputy observed the driver to have a shoe untied and a pant leg pulled up. The deputy asked if he could check him for weapons for officer safety. When the driver removed his shoes, a pink colored bag fell onto the ground by his feet. The contents of the pink bag appeared to be methamphetamine and later tested presumptive positive. The passenger was arrested for her warrant, and the driver was arrested for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Theft of Firearms

Friday, July 4

10:48 a.m. A man reported the theft of firearms he estimated to be worth $2,080. The firearms were not secured and were kept in his bedroom. He said he noticed the firearms were missing on July 3.
