MVR to host grant workshop

Mancos Valley Resources (MVR), a community support organization serving the Mancos Valley since 1995, will host a grant-writing workshop to be conducted by Clara A. Martinez, Ph.D. on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A light lunch will be served. Cost is $40.

The workshop will consist of addressing elements and criteria of private and public sector grant-making.

The new deadline for application is Oct. 1.

Library plans outdoor program for kids

The Mancos Public Library presents Outdoor Adventures at the Mancos Public Library, an after-school program.

Although supervised by adults, the activities will be derived by the interests and passions of the kids. Children ages 9-12 are encouraged to enroll. Each child must be able to walk/hike two miles over mildly rough terrain in all weather.

A snack will be provided. Cost is $20 for the program, and scholarships are available.

This program will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:30 p.m. and will follow the Mancos school district calendar. The first session will be on Thursday, Oct. 3. Enrollment is limited, so sign up early.

Service academy deadline nears

Rep. Scott Tipton is accepting applications from students interested in attending a U.S. service academy next year. The deadline to apply is Oct. 6.

Members of Congress may nominate a number of people from their districts to service academies including the Air Force, West Point, Annapolis and Merchant Marine.

Tipton nominated 22 students from the 3rd Congressional District to U.S. Service Academies in 2014. None were from Montezuma County.

Steel Magnolias headed to Mancos

On Monday, Oct. 6, The Steel Magnolias of San Marcos Texas will present a choreographed upbeat concert of Southern Gospel Music at the First Baptist Church in Mancos at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge, and all are invited to attend.

The church is at 150 N. Walnut in Mancos.
