The Dolores State Bank presented scholarships of $250 each to eight students in the graduating class of Dolores High School at the commencement exercises held Monday evening. Maxine Bartholomew, Helena Millard, Richard Nelson, Connie Paxton, Gloria Sturman, Carl Thompson, Debbie Vavra and Chris Walker were recipients of the scholarships.
Carol Dean Carson, 30, of Cortez died of burns in a two-vehicle crash as the gasoline tank on the car in which she was riding exploded.
Snowfall on Wolf Creek Pass is slowing down, but a storm on May 6 and 7 left three inches of snow. This brings the total for the winter to 784 inches. This is compared to the previous record of 619 inches set two winters ago and is the third year that snowfall has exceeded 600 inches since official records have been kept.
W. Harvey Skidmore, graduate of Dolores High School, class of 1959, is Lt. Commander of the Destroyer Escort Holt, the first U.S. warship to reach the Mayaguez last week in the area off Koh Tang Island.
The Town of Rico and the Rico Argentine Mining Company offer a continuing reward of $50 for evidence leading to the arrest and conviction of persons involved in the theft, vandalism, or destruction of any private, or public property, or public utilities within the Town of Rico or any property owned or controlled by the Rico Argentine Mining Company.
Jr. Bowling League season ended Friday, May 9 with several from Dolores participating. Shawna Ryan won the High Series Handicap, Lee Atkinson won The Most Improved Bowler, and Carol Applegate won the High Series.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gibbbs, enroute to their new home in Washington, D.C., are visiting at the home of Mrs. Gibbs' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie McRae in Cortez. Mrs. Gibbs, the former Coleen McRae, will enter Johns Hopkins University this September on a Fellowship.
Penny Pennington, daughter of Arveda Coster, her fiancee, Steve Sorlagas and his mother, Ethel Soragas all from San Fernando Valley, Calif., are visiting family and friends of Penny's this week here in Dolores. They plan on returning to California on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hamilton returned to Denver on Wednesday, where Mrs. Hamiton will receive treatment at the hospital.
Lenetta Oakes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Oakes was sick over the weekend but is reportedly feeling better now.
Norma Engel and Emma Kinkade were in Farmington on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Don McQuaide are home after spending some months in Arizona.
