Aug. 22

Home canners are invited to bring pressure canner lid with dial gauges to the Montezuma County Extension office on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., for free testing. The office is located in Room 102 of the Montezuma County Courthouse, 109 W. Main Street in Cortez.

Call for entries! Heart & Soul Cortez is teaming up with the Cortez Cultural Center to host the Art & Soul Cortez Art Exhibit from Friday, Aug. 23 to Saturday, Sept. 14. Entries are due no later than Friday, Aug. 16.

KSJD Summerfest and A Taste of Cortez will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. at The Cortez Cultural Center on Market Street just north of Main. A Taste of Cortez features sample sizes of their best fare from Jimmers, Ocean Pearl and Stonefish, to name just a few!

Aug. 26

The Pi単on Project will hold a 14-week "Strengthening Families" parenting class that will begin weekly on Monday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Pi単on Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez. The class is for families with children between 12 and 18 years old. There is no cost to participants. Enrollment is limited, call soon.

The Southwest Center for Independent Living is holding a brain injury support group called the 2nd Chance on Aug. 27 at 12 p.m. at 2409 Empire St. For more information, call 570-8001.

The Pi単on Project is pleased to offer a "Responsible Fatherhood" class that will begin on Wednesday, Aug.28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Pi単on Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez.

Dinner and child care will be provided. The curriculum is 15 weeks long. All fathers are welcome to join the program at any time.

There is no cost to participants. Enrollment is limited, call soon!

Leadership Montezuma is now taking applications for its 2013-14 class, which starts in early September. Leadership Montezuma meets once per month 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to learn and dialogue with the various organizations, public and private, that make the county and communities run.

"Where is Beauty in the Christian Experience?" will be the topic on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 for the next "How You Can Be Part of a Christian Community with Integrity and Not Believe All Those Things You Thought You Had to Believe" conversation. St. Barnabas Church (corner of North and Elm) hosts these gatherings for folks who struggle to reconcile their life experience with what they believe the church requires. Questions are required. Sept. 12

On Thursday, Sept. 12, Mesa Verde artist in residence Sue King from Lancaster, Ohio, will speak on her work as an art quilter and demonstrate the use of silk screening as a form of surface design.

Participants can make a textile postcard as a memento of their visit to the park, or screen a design on an item of their own clothing.

The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the library downstairs at Far View Lodge, Mesa Verde National Park, and is open to all.

Supplies will be provided but participants must bring their own item of clothing, such as a T-shirt, to screen if desired.

The Class of 1948 is celebrating their 65 year class reunion at the Elks Club on Sept. 14. All are welcome to join in the fun.
