Farmington’s National Night Out, Tuesday at Berg Park, plans a full slate activities, including hayrides, photo booths, a pumpkin patch and an obstacle course, capped by a bike giveaway.

It all happens Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 4-7 p.m. along the Animas River in Berg Park. it is free and open to the public.

The city holds its National Night Out the first Tuesday in October instead of the first Tuesday in August, as done commonly across the U.S.

“We’ve been doing it every year since 2015,” said Farmington Public Affairs Administrator Georgette Allen. “It’s a community policing partnership to bring communities together – get to know your neighbor, neighborhood camaraderie type thing.”

Two bicycles, including bike accessories, will be donated by Walmart, courtesy of Bisti Bikes and Barefoot Bikes. Helmets from Target will be part of the package for the lucky winners.

Music will be provided by Greg Brown with GB Entertainment DJ services.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign to make neighborhood safer and more caring. The goal is to bring police officers and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Millions of people nationwide participate in National Night Out with block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and youth events – even safety demonstrations and seminars by emergency personnel.

The Farmington Police Department’s K-9 team will demonstrate their highly trained dogs’ skills.

The designated objective for this year is to destigmatize mental illness and celebrate recovery.

Two fundraisers are associated with this event.

The Beat the Chief at Basketball Toss will benefit National Alliance on Mental Illness, San Juan Chapter. Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe will take on all challengers.

Additionally, Spudnuts doughnuts and Navajo Tacos will be sold to help offset the medical expenses of recently injured Farmington Police Officer Jared Stock. The Navajo Tacos must be prepurchased online at https://bit.ly/PurchaseNavajoTaco and picked up at the event.
