Southwest Singers spotlight songs of love and spring

‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,’ ‘Splendored Thing’ are among selections
The Southwest Singers presents its spring concert May 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. at the First Methodist Church.

The Southwest Singers will present their spring concert on May 6 and 7 at the First Methodist Church.

The choir has been practicing since January on a selection of songs including “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “Roses.” The women will also present two madrigals – a cappella pieces in three parts from the Renaissance era. The beautiful choral arrangement of “Sure on this Shining Night” by Samuel Barber will be performed as well as a lovely Chinese folk song, a selection from “Les Misarables” and a 1976 pop hit.

“I had not participated in a choir for 20 years before I joined the Southwest Singers” said Debbie Kill. “It’s great to finish your workday and spend time singing, and there’s a thrill when the song comes together”.

“It’s a great week of choral music because folks can listen to the Mancos Choir in Cortez on Tuesday, and check out the Southwest Singers on Friday or Saturday.”

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. both nights, and light refreshments are provided.

The Southwest Singers encourages singers to become members. After this concert, the group will start practices again in the fall to prepare for the winter season.
