Mancos Inn renovations nearly complete

After purchasing the Mancos Inn and Hostel in November 2015, owners Amy Holmgren and Sarah Allen worked many 12-hour days and completed project after project to fix up the building.

“Getting it up to speed has been a chore,” Allen said Wednesday.

Allen and Holmgren purchased the Inn, at 200 W. Grand Ave. in downtown Mancos, from a previous owner. The owner was looking to sell the Inn and convinced Allen and Holmgren to buy it, which happened quickly, Holmgren said. Allen owns the Painted Turtle Studio, which shares the building with the Inn on the downstairs level.

They remodeled every room, expanded the kitchen and added a new sign, among other renovations to the pre-1900 building. Most of the improvements are finished except for some painting work and other finishing touches, Holmgren said.

The Inn features 17 rooms, including two studio apartments and a six-bed dorm room or hostel. Three of the rooms have private bathrooms and 11 have shared bathrooms.

A balcony area overlooks a garden behind the building. Holmgren said they sometimes have bonfires in the garden area.

The kitchen area provides a place for Mancos Inn guests to cook a meal and gather together, Holmgren said.

The Mancos Inn attracts all sorts of guests, from European tourists visiting Mesa Verde to Mancos locals who need a room for their in-laws, Holmgren said.

“We have a lot of diverse people here,” she said.
