Four Corners Rollergirls get ready to rumble in Portland

Team hosts bake sale to fund trip
The Four Corners Roller Girls were recently invited to join forces with the Moab Roller Derby team for a bout in Portland.

Doktor Grimm, Diabla Roja, Sparkle DABS and MACHing Jay are getting ready to rumble in Portland, Oregon, next month.

You may know them as Shawn Collins, Carrie Davis, Crystal Rector and Marissa Mach – but as members of the 4 Corners Rollergirls, they’ve got aliases for when they’re on the track.

The Four Corners Roller Girls have about a dozen members from Montezuma County, and recently, they were invited to join forces with the Moab Roller Derby team for a bout in Portland. Together, the two squads have taken on the moniker, Desert Rats Roller Dolls.

Some of the team members have traveled to compete in Grand Junction, Monte Vista, Vail and Salt Lake City. But their bout against the Rose City Rollers’ novice, or fresh meat team – scheduled for Friday, March 10 – is a-whole-nother level.

“It’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go and play Portland,” Collins explained. “Because their non-novice team, or their traveling team, is one of the top in the world.”

The Four Corners Roller Girls are currently fundraising through their GoFundMe page at: http://bit.ly/4CornersRG and they’re also hosting a bake sale and beginning aerial yoga classes this weekend.

The bake sale will be outside of LivWell in Mancos from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, and the first of two beginner aerial yoga classes will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10-11 a.m. at the Yoga House in Dolores for a $10 donation. Donations will help the skaters bout in Portland, as well as for bouts locally throughout the year. Space is limited to 13 participants. To sign up, visit: http://bit.ly/4CRGyoga or email the Yoga House directly at yogahouse1975@gmail.com

“They’re a couple of great opportunities to meet the roller girls and to learn more about it, because we’re also recruiting,” said Collins. “And it’s just a good, open team and we’re very supportive of one another and it’s really empowering to be a part of it.”

Those interested in helping the 4 Corners Roller Girls get to Portland or learn more about joining the team can swing by the bake sale, register for the yoga session, or visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/4CornersRollerGirls.
