11 candidates apply for judgeship in 6th Judicial District

Position is being vacated by Todd Norvell, who was appointed to bench in 2017

Eleven candidates will vie to fill the void left by 6th Judicial District Judge Todd Norvell, who cited health reasons when he tendered his resignation Oct. 24, three years before the end of his term.

Norvell’s last day on the job is Jan. 14. He was appointed to the bench in 2017.

The 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Dec. 20 to consider the candidates. The commission will interview the candidates and review their written applications and recommendations, then submit its nominees to the governor. The governor will then choose a judge to serve for two years before voters can decide to retain or dismiss the judge.

The candidates who applied are Anthony Baca of Dolores County; Matt Margeson of Dolores; Christian Champagne, Sarah Law, Mary Pero and Douglas Reynolds of Durango; Anthony Edwards of Silverton; Justin Fay and Todd Weaver of Pagosa Springs; Reid Stewart of Hesperus; and Barbara Stauch of Denver.

The 6th judicial District includes Archuleta, San Juan and La Plata counties.

Public comment on the qualifications of the applicants is invited. Comments may be directed at any member of the commission, with a copy to the ex officio chair Justice Melissa Hart, 2 E. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80203 no later than 4 p.m. Dec. 14.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly said Anthony Baca is from Dolores. He lives in Dolores County, not the town of Dolores. Incorrect information was given to the Herald.
