Mancos Spring Hoedown lines up bands for April event

Event benefits Montezuma School To Farm Project

The Montezuma School to Farm Project announced Tuesday the fifth annual Mancos Hoedown will be April 29 at 5 p.m. at the Mancos Opera House, according to the group’s Facebook page.

The annual event takes place in the spring, and all proceeds go to School to Farm. Durango bands Carute Roma, Six Dollar String Band and The Great Contention will provide entertainment this year.

“We have three great bands lined up,” said Sarah Syverson, interim director of School to Farm. “It’s really a lot of fun.”

Tickets will be $20 for adults and free for kids 17 and under.

Carute Roma play classic “Roma” music and original songs that feature fiddle, accordion and trumpet, according to their website. The Six Dollar String band plays “old time” music that features banjo, fiddle and guitar, according to their Facebook page. The Great Contention play original songs as well as traditional bluegrass and Americana music, according to their website.

The hoedown will feature lots of local food catered by Sweetwater Gypsies of Dolores, Syverson said. Tucson Tamales will donate a variety of tamales, and local breweries and wineries will be pouring drinks, she said.

A silent auction also will take place at the Hoedown, with farm and homestead items available, Syverson said.

The hoedown will be especially important for School to Farm this year because of the group’s financial situation, Syverson said. The program took some financial hits last year and was unable to develop strong funding streams. However, the group’s finances are improving, Syverson said.

“That’s improving drastically with community involvement,” she said.
