Lecture series opens with history of Galloping Goose, railroad

The Journal

The Life-long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College presents “The Rio Grande Southern Railroad: A Short, Eventful History” on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. This free lecture will be held in Noble Hall, Room 130.

Cres Fleming, retired chemist, railroad historian, volunteer, and collector, shares how the Rio Grande Southern connected the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad at Durango with the Denver & Rio Grande at Ridgway. As recently discovered documents show, its construction and financing were unusual. Fleming will discuss boom times and receiverships, plus the development of the Galloping Geese to avoid bankruptcy.
