A Cortez tradition: the Community Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Day, members of our community came together to prepare and serve the Annual Community Christmas Dinner. We served over 300 meals, and have many to thank for again making this event a success.

Cortez Cultural Center volunteers answered questions, signed up volunteers and took orders for meal deliveries. Montezuma County made the Annex available at no charge, and staff at Senior Services made sure we had the cooking equipment we needed. As always, Re-1 made their refrigerator and freezer available to store food. Jim Lynch came in traditional Scottish attire and played the bagpipes. Community members donated homemade desserts, and Walmart, City Market, and Sysco discounted food. The M-CHS FFA and Safeway provided the citrus fruit that graced the tables along with beautiful poinsettias donated by Cliffrose and Four Seasons, and Slavens loaned us coffee urns.

And, of course, a big thank you to all those folks who came to the Annex before Christmas to set up tables and transform the space into a festive holiday venue, and to those who volunteered on Christmas Day to carve turkeys, prepare food, serve, and clean up. Many of these wonderful folks volunteer every year while others came for the first time this year. They all demonstrated the true meaning of the holiday.

Monetary donations were made by a number of community service organizations, including Kiwanis, Vectra Bank and Four Corners Community Bank. Many individuals donated as well, and for this we are most grateful. Folks can donate to the Community Christmas Dinner anytime as Vectra Bank and Four Corners Community Bank accept donations throughout the year.
