Winter storm warning issued for San Juan Mountains

Elevations above 8,500 feet could see up to 14 inches of snow
Colorado Department of Transportation snowplows may be out in force on the mountain passes on Monday as a snowstorm moves into the region.

A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight Sunday to noon Tuesday for elevations above 8,500 feet as a weather pattern moves into San Juan Mountains that is expected to bring 8 to 14 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

The towns listed in the weather advisory include Hesperus, Rico and Silverton.

“The good news for you guys is this storm’s taking more of a southern track,” said Megan Stackhouse, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “So the southern San Juans are definitely going to see best impacts from it.”

For elevations above 8,500 feet, Monday temperatures during the day will hover around the mid- to low 30s, with overnight lows down to the mid- to low-20s. Winds will be out of the southwest, with expected gusts up to 35 mph.

In Cortez, there’s a 90 percent chance of rain on Monday, with a high temperature of 46 degrees and an overnight low of 31. Winds are expected to be 5-15 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph.

On Tuesday, there’s a 50 percent chance of light snowfall before 11 a.m., then a light chance of rain. The high is expected to be near 45, with an overnight low of 23 degrees.

Wednesday is expected to be sunny, with a daytime high of 46 and an overnight low of 23.
