Mancos, Dolores and Dove Creek enter postseason

San Juan Basin League teams begin district tournaments
Dove Creek junior Faith Johnson (12) leads the Lady Bulldogs’ celebration after scoring in a match against Ignacio earlier this season.

After finishing out the regular season last week, San Juan Basin League volleyball teams have entered postseason play.

The Dove Creek Lady Bulldogs were the first team in action, sweeping Ouray on Wednesday in a pigtail contest of the Class 1A District 1 Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-9, 4-7 SJBL) advance to bracketed pool play with fellow district members De Beque, Nucla and North Park – with the top three teams qualifying for the regional tournament.

They will begin play on Saturday in De Beque against North Park at 8 a.m.

Class 2A District 3

As Class 2A members of the SJBL, Dolores and Mancos are will play in the Class 2A District 3 Tournament in Ridgway along with Ridgway, Norwood, Telluride, and Ignacio, with the top three teams advancing to regionals.

Finishing the regular season with a 3-2 win over Norwood, the Lady Bears (8-11, 6-7 SJBL) enter the district tourney on a high note.

They are slated to take on Mancos and Ridgway on Saturday in pool play.

The Mancos Lady Blue Jays (2-17, 0-11 SJBL) dropped their final regular season contest last week against the Ignacio Bobcats,3-1.

But head coach Brittany Lang said that she saw her team play more confidently in the final two sets of the match.

Mancos opens pool play on Friday against Ridgway, and then plays Dolores on Saturday.

And while the Jays finished the season with an 0-11 league record, Lang knows that anything can happen in the district tournament.

“Sports are built the way that they are so that the season is like practice,” said Lang. “We’re building up for this postseason and when we go in, it’s going to be really big for us.”
