Work on Main Street brings Cortez up to standard

Colorado Department of Transportation has completed traffic sign and signal changes along U.S. Highway 160 in Cortez.

Construction to install the new lights and signs were wrapped up by Tuesday evening, said CDOT Communications Manager Lisa Schwantes.

The changes will bring intersections along Main Street in Cortez up to current CDOT standards, Schwantes said. Those include flashing yellow arrows for left turns and signs instructing turning drivers to yield to pedestrians.

The changes should improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety at intersections, she said.

Timing of the signals at the intersections has changed slightly, as well. The new signals can recognize how many vehicles are in certain lanes and whether there are pedestrians that need to cross the intersection.

Earlier this summer, CDOT crews repainted lane lines at certain intersections as part of the same project.
