More information needed on sales tax

I read with interest the article (Journal, July 3) regarding the county commissioners decision to ask the voters to approve a “sales tax that would fund new broadband infrastructure and improved internet service countywide.”

I agree that internet service speeds and broadband capabilities are lacking in parts of the county. I for one can not even get the minimum service available through my phone service because of my location. So any improvement would be welcome.

But, other than information that this would be a 1 percent sales tax and it would generate $1.7 million to $2 million in revenues, there were few specifics on when the new service would be available or what the potential costs would be to users after the infrastructure is completed.

It is easy to see that the residents in Montezuma County are going to pay for this new high speed internet twice. Initially (and continually) through the 1 percent sales tax, and then monthly (and continually) from some service provider.

So you would hope that before the November election there will be far more specifics and far less hype and gee-whiz.
