Kicking off its second season in existence, the Dolores High School girls golf team is small, yet talented.

Composed of three young players of varying abilities, the group has been practicing hard in anticipation of the upcoming year.

According to first year coach Jeff Carr, this season’s focus will revolve around gaining knowledge of the game and developing skills.

“First and foremost, if you don’t enjoy the game of golf, don’t play,” said Carr. “Our goal is to have fun, learn and steadily improve.”

Leading this year’s team will be Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Kiselya Plewe, who, fresh off an impressive basketball season, will look to play well on the links.

“This year is kind of a rebuilding year for the team,” said Plewe. “We’re just trying to get better. My goal is to go to state.”

Complementing Plewe will be M-CHS sophomore Keyana Matteson, who, after playing for the first time last season, is looking to improve.

“It was fun and it was a good learning experience,” said Matteson, discussing last season. “I like golf because it is relaxing sometimes.”

Rounding out the team’s current lineup will be homeschool sophomore Abigail Smith.

After picking up the game of golf last month, Smith is already improving on a daily basis.

As is often the case for newly formed athletic programs, the girls’ golf team is always seeking additional players to round out its lineup.

“What we’re looking for is any girl that wants to learn to play golf,” said Carr. “Golf is just a terrific sport.”

After opening its season on March 17 in Fruita, the team will play in five more regular season tournaments, highlighted by an April 23 tournament in Cortez.

As always, local golf fans, as well as interested community members, are encouraged to attend the home tournament.
