Invigorated by one of the warmest springs in recent memory, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls tennis team has been working hard in preparation for their season.

Entering the year with a roster filled with experience players, the Panthers are optimistic about their chances for success.

“We have a good mix of talent, athletic ability and character,” said M-CHS head coach Dan Wood. “There are some really good athletes with not very much experience and there are some athletes that aren’t really great, but have more experience.”

While the Panthers have yet to name a final lineup, seven players are currently in the running for the team’s three singles spots.

Among those is senior Tara Abrams, who, entering her high school tennis season, brings a wealth of experience to the court.

“(Abrams) has good serving and if she starts to get a little more aggressive, I think she’s going to do well,” said Wood.

Also competing for singles spots will be junior Sera King and sophomores Raquel Lucero, Kearra Boggs, Tori Calliham and junior Sera King.

“The majority of our team is juniors and sophomores,” said King. “We all get along pretty well. Last year it was all fun and games, but this year, it’s starting to get a little more competitive.”

Discussing his team’s goals for the upcoming season, Wood said that he expects nothing less than solid results.

“We want to learn about ourselves, have fun, win and have a competitive experience at regionals,” said Wood. I think we’ll do well at the Delta Tournament and we’ve got a shot at sending a couple of people to state.”

The Panthers will open their season on March 15 with home matches against Delta High School and Gallup High School.

“I’m looking forward to the year,” said Wood.
