Local dancer to train in New York

MIKAYLA HASSINGER has been accepted to train this summer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Mikayla Hassinger, a junior at Dolores High school, has been accepted to the six-week professional summer training program at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York.

Hassinger was born in Sacramento, Calif., and grew up in Salt Lake City. She began her dance training at the age of 3 at Artistic Dance Academy under the direction of Jamie Plott.

She moved to Mancos at age 13, where she began to attend Dance in the Rockies and joined the competition team.

During her time on the Dance in the Rockies team, she has been awarded multiple top 10 titles for both group and solo pieces, including an Elite Top First award and third runner up for Miss Dance at KAR Denver.

She was accepted as an apprentice at Terpis Contemporary Dance Company.

She has trained under Chloe Roberts, Anne Gillis, Melissa Largent, Chris Jones, Haley Kostas, Valerie Maldonia, Sarah Donahue, Jessica Starr, Barry Yougblood, Tyce Diorio, Kayla Radomski, Andy Pellick and Bobby Newberry.

She has received multiple scholarships from both UMP and NYCDA conventions.
