D-12 wins softball tourney a third time

19 teams compete in Escalante event

Among the many Escalante Days attractions, few produce as much excitement as the softball tournament. Held on Aug. 9-10, this year's tournament drew 19 teams from throughout the Four Corners.

New to this year's tournament was a three-division format that separated men's competitive teams, men's recreational teams and women's teams. According to tournament organizer Leo Garand, the format change allowed teams to play more games.

"Everybody played a minimum of three games and everybody was happy," said Garand. "People were happy with the competition being separated into appropriate brackets."

Winning their third Men's Competitive Division tournament title of all time, D-12 bested UNC in a rematch of last year's finals. In the Women's Division, BIA defeated TT&R to take top honors.

Competing in the Men's Recreational Division, the Dolores based "Firehouse Boys," represented their hometown well, winning all of their games in impressive fashion.

According to Garand, the annual tournament went well and will return again next year.
