Send announcements to Items submitted at least two weeks in advance will have a better chance of getting published; items submitted several days before the event might not get published. Senior Travelers to present on upcoming Fall Colors tour

The 4 Corners Senior Travelers will have a presentation at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at the Annex building at 107 N. Chestnut St. on the group’s upcoming tour, Colors of New England.

The group has organized an eight day journey through New England’s charming and vibrant northern states. The trip begins on Thursday, Oct. 11 in Massachusetts and travels through Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and returning to Boston. Those interested in travel or joining this fun travel group should come learn more.

Middle School art students will hold art reception, show

The art students from Cortez Middle School invite the public to come to their art reception on Wednesday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Their art work will be on display at the library from April 9-30.

Vermillion Cliffs featured in photography show

Tom McBride will take you on a vicarious journey of the Vermilion Cliffs through his natural-light photographic show “Hidden Treasures of Paria Plateau,” Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.

Spring is theme of April Storytime at the Cortez Public Library

“Too Early for Spring?” is the April theme of the newly-renamed Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Both days will follow the same theme. On Thursday there will be no craft. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays.

“Did the Tooth Fairy Come?” will be discussed on Thursday, April 12 and Friday, April 13. “Are You a Good Steward?” will be presented on Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20. “Jump Frog” will wrap up the month on Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27.

Raising Readers Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program. For more information, contact the library at 565-8117.

Nest will host Business After Hours networking event

Relax and unwind with friends, both old and new at Business After Hours on Thursday, April 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Nest Child Advocacy Center, 140 N. Linden in Cortez.

There is no cost to attend and Cortez Chamber’s Business After Hours are open house events for Chamber Members and invited guests. The events are designed to provide chamber members with networking opportunities in a casual setting, after standard business hours, and are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at various exciting locations.

Area 9Health Fairs offers free or low-cost health screenings

In partnership with 9HealthFair, Southwest Memorial is proud to assist with the Mancos Valley, Dove Creek, and Cortez Health Fairs. The Mancos 9Health Fair will take place on Saturday, April 14 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Mancos Valley Junior High School. The Cortez 9Health Fair will be on Saturday, April 21 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Cortez Recreation Center. The Dove Creek 9Health Fair will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Dove Creek High School.

Take advantage of opportunities on these dates to access health services you may have missed during the year, and learn about important health topics from many local providers. Free screenings will include: Blood pressure checks, Heart health screening, Breast exams, Vision and hearing screening, Body mass index measurement, Balance assessment, Sleep apnea assessment, Spinal alignment evaluation, Nutrition screening, and much more. Masonic Lodge Vial of Life Project will be offered during 9Health Fair

The Cortez Masonic Lodge #133 A.F.& A.M. in partnership with the Montezuma County Emergency Services Association will host a Vial of Life Project during the county 9Health Fair. We will be set up at both 9Health Fair sites: Mancos on Saturday, April 14 and in Cortez on Saturday, April 21.

The Vial of Life is a nationally recognized program, designed to speak for you when you can’t speak for yourself. The vial contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment. Montezuma County EMS staff will be present to answer your medically-related questions.

3rd Annual Early Childhood Fair and Celebration

The 3rd Annual Early Childhood Fair and Celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the County Annex Building, 107 N. Chestnut St.

This free event is for families with children from birth to five. It is an opportunity to find out about programs, supports and services for young children in our community. Free services will include: developmental screening, hearing, vision and dental screening, car seat and bike helmet safety, child ID and fingerprinting, preschool and child care enrollment as well as kid’s activities. Bring your child’s immunization records for review and free shot coupons. Bike helmets will be available for $5 and car seats for $20. Fabulous entertainment, door prizes and much more!

Area mobile blood drives will take place in Mancos, Dove Creek

United Blood Services will hold a mobile blood drive from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Mancos Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, Cultural Hall, 201 Montezuma. Another mobile blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the gym at Dove Creek High School, 525 N. Main.

Cortez Farmers Market holds spring planning meeting

The Cortez Farmers Market invites all of last year’s vendors, and others interested in participating in this year’s Market, to attend its Annual Spring Meeting from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 14 at the Calvin Denton Room, Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.

Applications for participation in the Market will be available for returning and new vendors towards the end of the meeting. Applications, with fee payment may be returned to the Montezuma County CSU Extension Office beginning Monday, April 16. Returning vendors have until Friday, April 27 to submit their application with payment to reserve their space(s). After April 27, the Cortez Farmers’ Market Committee will meet to consider new vendor applications and assign space(s). The Market will open on Saturday, June 2 and end October 27.

Hospice offers Grief Camp for kids, families

Hospice of Montezuma will host “The Healing Garden Grief Camp” for kids ages 6-18 and their families who have experienced the death of a loved one. The Camp will be held Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 515 North Park St., Cortez.

The Camp is Free to all attendees and a breakfast snack and lunch will be provided. Through a combination of therapeutic and fun activities, participants are helped to process their feelings and learn new ways to help themselves cope with the experience. Advance registration is requested, but not required.

Low Vision Expo will have options for visually impaired

The third Low Vision Expo presented by Southwest Center for Independence will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18 at Empire Electric’s Calvin Denton room, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.

The community is invited to participate and learn about the local support agencies that can assist the blind and visually impaired. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Westac, AKB and AGA vendors will all be available to demonstrate the latest devices and technology for the visually impaired community. Luncheon is sponsored by Safeway, Walmart and City Market.

‘Hell and Back Again’ will screen at Community Cinema in Mancos

The Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., will present “Hell and Back Again,” an ITV Community Cinema film at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19 in the Community Meeting Room.

The film is about U.S. Marine Sergeant Nathan Harris, 25, who leads his unit to fight a ghostlike enemy in Afghanistan. Wounded in battle, Harris returns to North Carolina and his devoted wife Ashley to fight pain, addiction, and the terrifying normalcy of life at home. A panel discussion may follow.

Cultural Center will hold wine-tasting fundraiser

The next in the Cortez Cultural Center’s series of monthly wine-tasting fundraisers will take place Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at 25 N. Market St.
